Answer
Will Barkdeco affect the growth of plants?
How much Barkdeco will I need?
When deciding on a ground cover you must find one that does not affect the growth of plants; some types of material may contain toxins or breakdown quickly affecting the nitrogen draw down of the soil.
As Barkdeco nuggets are very resistant to breakdown there is little effect to the plants by the covering. Some types of wood chips can cause nitrogen draw down affecting the growth of the plants and it is surrounding. Barkdeco made from Pinus radiata bark does not have an effect like this.
Landscaping and weed suppression:
Make sure the area is free of weeds and all plants have been planted in their respective places. If a weed mat is applied then place a 50-100mm layer of Barkdeco over the weed mat to cover the area. If no weed mat is applied then it is preferred to place a 100mm+ layer of Barkdeco over the site to help suppress weed growth.
Children’s Playgrounds:
As playgrounds are a well utilised area it is better to cover the area so that it will last. It is best to place a barrier layer between the soil and Barkdeco to prevent mixing with the soil when children are playing in the area.
When the area is prepared, place a 100-200 mm layer of Medium or Large Barkdeco over the designated area. Every now and then during the coarse of use, rake the material over so that well used areas do not become barren.
Pots and planters:
For pots and planters ensure that the plant is well potted and fertiliser granules have been added if required. For larger planters place a 50mm layer of Small or Medium grade over the surface. For smaller pots place an even layer over the surface of the pot to cover the potting media.
